In an interview with The Independent, Ian Rankin gave his candid opinion on the state of the crime fiction industry. He claims that female writers such as Patricia Cornwell are responsible for the constant demand for bloodier and more gruesome books.

Rankin also caused a bit of controversy by claiming that most of these female crime writers are in fact lesbians. Outlandish as this may seem, according to The Independent all he did was state publicly what everyone already knew, or at least suspected. This has sparked a debate amongst authors and was the topic of discussion on a very heated Woman's Hour on BBC Radio 4, which you can listen to here.
